Jannik Sinner Wins The US Open Men’s Singles Title
World Number 1 and top seed Jannik Sinner came through the final to win his maiden US Open title in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, dispatching the American home hope Taylor Fritz in just 2 hours and 15 minutes. Sinner remained focused during the tournament despite the doping saga. He faced skepticism and criticism but he prevailed to claim his second Grand Slam title.
The 23 year old is the first ever Italian man to win the US Open title and the youngest man to win both the hard-court Grand Slam in a single season, lifting the trophies at both Melbourne and New York. The women's singles champion, Aryna Sabelenka also achieved the same feat, winning at both Melbourne and New York this season, becoming the first since Angelique Kerber in 2016.
Interestingly, both Sinner and Sabelenka played first-time major finalists and Americans, Taylor Fritz and Jessica Pegula in the finals and won in straight sets. The finals match-up was nothing anyone would have imagined. It was the first time in a long while to see Americans playing for the major title on both the men’s and women’s side at the same time. However, it was an unfortunate weekend for the Americans as both fell short at their chance to lift what would have been their maiden Grand Slam Title.
Jannik Sinner continues his stellar season despite doping and injury setbacks. He currently boasts an impressive W-L record of 55-5, lifting 6 titles including 2 major titles, and solidifying his status as one of the best on tour at the moment. He will be the top seed going into the ATP Finals in Turin, and he will stand a chance to end the season as the world number one and hopefully win the title there which he narrowly missed last year.
