Jannik Sinner Crowned Champion At The Australian Open

A new champion arises on Rod Laver Arena as Jannik Sinner completes a comeback from 2-0 sets down against third time AO finalist Daniil Medvedev to claim his first title at a major event. Sinner won in 5 sets 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, becoming the only third Italian men to have won a Grand Slam title.

The 22 year-old had a slow start as Medvedev came out to the court ultra aggressive in the first 2 sets, unlike anything that we have seen from the world no. 3 as he was known for his unorthodox defensive playstyle that grinds down his opponent. Sinner struggled to keep his head in the first 2 sets as Medvedev was hitting harder and flatter groundstrokes from everywhere in the court. It was a groundbreaking performance from Medvedev until the third set where he visibly looked more tired than he was at the start of the match allowing Sinner to take advantage and clinch the next two sets.

Unfortunately, the former world no. 1 was unable to swing the momentum back into his advantage as Sinner fired off the final forehand winner to claim the trophy in the fifth set. Another heartbreaker for Medvedev as he lost in a similar fashion as he did in the AO finals against Rafael Nadal in 2022. It was inevitable that Sinner won the largely physical battle as Medvedev was unable to sustain the aggression due to his exhausted body after playing long rounds before he somehow reached the finals.

As a result of his marathon matches at the tournament this year,  he set a record for the most sets played in a single grand slam (31) and the longest time (24 hours and 17 minutes) spent on court in the history of Grand Slams. We hope Meddy would one day lift the Australian Open trophy.

Impressive achievement and performance by Jannik Sinner as he wins his maiden Slam after also defeating the 10-time AO and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Sinner continues his impressive rise in the ranks since last season and will be looking to win more this season.
