Iga Swiatek Claims 5th Title Of The Season In Beijing

Poland no. 1 Iga Swiatek marches on in an amazing season with her fifth title despite losing the World No. 1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open as she was unable to defend the title this year. This was Iga Swiatek’s China Open debut and her seventh final match of the season. She played against world no. 22 Liudmila Samsonova and won the title in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in just 69 minutes. Swiatek extends her lead in the head-to-head against Samsonova to 3-0.

24-year-old Samsonova had a tough draw going into the finals. She had to go through a big server and world no. 5 Elena Rybakina, Jelena Ostapenko, Petra Kvitova, and Marta Kostyuk before finally playing Iga Swiatek for the finals. However, by going deep at this event, she has moved back into the Top 20 on the WTA Rankings.

The China Open win marks Swiatek’s 16th Career title and 6th WTA 1000 title, making her the first player since Serena Williams to win five or more titles in back-to-back seasons in 2014-2015. She leads the tour with five titles won in the season and is the only player to have won six or more WTA 1000 titles before turning 23. She will be looking to reclaim the top spot from Sabalenka at the WTA finals in Cancun!
