Types Of Strings

Finding the right tennis strings for your level and playing style is essential for adding an edge to your game and for preventing injuries. Find out about the different types of tennis strings and which is the most suited for you.

  • Great for the aggressive intermediate to advanced level player looking for extra control, spin and durability. Polyester strings are harder and have lower levels of elasticity. This allows for them to be more durable than other strings and offer excellent control.

These types of strings often have a smooth texture as well as an edged profile to provide players with more spin to their shots. The smoothness of the strings creates more movement on the string bed which leads to greater snapback (strings snapping back in place quickly after striking the ball). The edged profile of the strings allows for the ball to be gripped better upon contact, thus enhancing the spin generated by your shots.

The downside to polyester strings is that they can be jarring on some players’ arms. This is why we recommend that only experienced players use a full bed of these strings on their racket. If you have experienced arm injuries in the past, it is a good idea to check out the other types of strings we offer.

  • Used by many professionals on tour, natural gut offers great feel, comfort, power and control when strung at a high tension. When strung at a lower tension it can be an excellent setup for beginners and intermediate players. This string pretty much has all the bells and whistles!

However, it is not commonly used among recreational players as it is the most costly and tends to break more frequently.

The pros can afford to get their rackets restrung after every match but for the most of us, natural gut is probably not a sustainable option. Good idea to give it a try just for the experience though!

  • A more affordable alternative to natural gut, multifilament strings offer a good level of comfort and added power to your shots. They are made of multiple layers of filament wrapped with a synthetic outer shell. This allows for better absorption upon impacting the ball and provides a comfortable hitting experience.

Multifilament strings are suitable for beginners and intermediate level players who are looking to lower the risk of arm injuries. The higher level of elasticity allows for a catapult effect when the ball contacts your racket, leading to added power and excellent ball pocketing (feeling the ball on the strings as you hit).

The downsides of multifilament strings are that they tend to break more easily compared to polyester and synthetic gut. As they offer more power, this might lead to a decrease in the level of control.

  • Holding a moderate level of firmness and elasticity, synthetic gut strings stand in between polyester and multifilament when it comes to power, spin and control. This makes it a very popular choice for beginners, intermediate and some advanced level players.

Synthetic gut is also one of the more affordable string types on the market. It will offer you more power and comfort than a polyester string but also more durability than a multifilament or natural gut string.

The downsides of synthetic gut is that it is less durable and has less control than polyester strings. This is why most advanced level players and professionals on tour choose polyester over synthetic gut as control is priority for these players.

Our Selection Of Strings

  • The Velocity MLT from Head is a multifilament string built for comfort, feel and power. Similar to many other multifilaments, it is soft on the arm and provides loads of power in your game.

The Velocity is incredibly comfortable as it is packed with 1,000 flexible microfiber which makes it super soft on the arm on contact. It plays similarly to many of the other multifilament strings but it stands out for its above-average control and spin.

However, if you are looking for durability in your string, this might not be the go-to string. Overall, it is a great string for players looking for comfort and power without sacrificing control and spin.

  • The RPM Blast from Babolat is a black, octagonally-shaped, co-polyester string. Like most polyester strings, it too offers spin, control and durability.

The RPM Blast is a stiff and firm string that is great for hard hitters and players who want a lot of control and spin in their shots. The string is said to be one of the lowest powered polyester strings. Though it does not offer a whole lot of power, it provides a nice crisp feel when hitting the topspin shots.

The gear-shaped design allows the string to grab and pocket the ball really well, allowing for accurate shots with control and spin. The shape of the string also helps in terms of recoiling and allowing the string to return to its position right after the shot which is great for faster swingers.

  • The RPM Rough from Babolat is a textured and less stiff version of the RPM Blast, an octagonal-shaped, co-polyester string. The Rough is the more arm-friendly one out of the two strings.

The RPM Rough adds power to the shots with a livelier response allowing the ball to travel through the court easily. With this added power the RPM Rough loses some of the signature control of the RPM Blast. Nevertheless, it still offers lots of spin potential.

The RPM Rough does not hold the tension well like most polyester strings as it is softer. Overall, it is a great string for players who are looking for a more arm-friendly polyester string that does not sacrifice spin potential.

  • The synthetic gut from Babolat is a monofilament nylon string. Like many other synthetic guts, this string is a well-balanced string that offers a mix of power and control.

The Syn Gut is considered a softer and more responsive string that offers a crisp feel to shots. Similar to other synthetic guts, it offers a good amount of power but lacks a little bit of spin potential and control.

This string is a good mix of everything and can be used in a hybrid setup to soften the string bed if used with a stiffer string. It is probably one of the most arm-friendly options amongst all the other synthetic guts in the market and is recommended for beginner players who are starting to experiment with different types of strings.

  • The Hyper-G is a bright co-poly string from Solinco. The string has a square shape with four grippy edges. Like most poly strings it can provide more control and spin to your game.

The Hyper-G is a monofilament polyester string that is stiff and powerless. It is more forgiving and comfortable than most of the co-poly strings in the market. It is not the most grippy poly string but the edges on the strings can still bite into the ball well enough to add spins to your shots.

The Hyper-G is one of the more durable and tension-retaining co-poly strings on the market. Overall, it is a great string for players who are looking for a more durable and comfortable string that also offers more spin and control.

  • The Hyper-G Soft is a brightly coloured co-poly string from Solinco. As the name suggests it is the softer, less stiff rendition of the normal Hyper-G. The string has a square shape with four edges to bite into the ball. Like most poly strings it can provide more control and spin to your game.

The Hyper-G soft is a monofilament polyester string. It is softer which makes it slightly more powerful than its stiffer counterpart. It is forgiving and more comfortable than most of the co-poly strings in the market. The edges on the strings provide good spin potential and control, biting into the ball well.

The Hyper-G Soft is a good alternative to the Hyper-G if you are looking for more feel without giving up the spin and control Hyper-G offers. Overall, it is a great string for players who are looking for a more comfortable polyester string that also offers good spin, control and power.

  • The Confidential is a co-poly string from Solinco. The string has a square shape with four grippy edges like the Hyper-G and Tour bite. The Confidential is stiffer than the Hyper-G and less stiff than the Tour Bite. Poly strings, like this one, can enhance your game by providing more control and spin.

The Confidential is a monofilament polyester string that is stiff and powerless but is still comfortable to play with. It can be strung at low to medium tension to maximise the power. The four grippy edges are also designed to provide more bite on the ball to help generate more spin, together with the snap back of the strings.

The Confidential is one of the more durable and tension-retaining shaped co-poly strings on the market. Overall, it is a great string for intermediate players who are looking for a more controlled game.

  • The Tour Bite is a firm co-poly string from Solinco that offers control, durability and spin. It boasts a square profile like the Hyper-G; however, its increased stiffness improves the spin potential and control it offers. Like most poly strings; it can provide more control and spin to your game.

Tour Bite is a monofilament-shaped polyester string that has lots of spin potential. The string is stiffer than most polyester strings in the market making it one of the best co-poly strings for feel and control. The shape profile of the strings allows it to bite the ball well during contact and makes it easy to add spin to the shots.

The Tour Bite is a low-powered polyester that allows the player to swing out without having to worry; therefore, it is only suitable for slightly heavier frames and faster strokes. Overall, it is a great string for players who are looking for a string that offers absolute control and feel, but who does not mind the stiffness.

  • The Tour Bite Soft is a co-poly string from Solinco, a softer version of the original Tour Bite. Like most poly strings it can provide more control and spin to your game.

Tour bite soft is a monofilament-shaped polyester string that has lots of spin potential. The string is softer than most polyester strings on the market making it one of the most arm-friendly co-poly strings. Though it is a soft polyester, It still bites the ball well during contact and makes it easy to add spin to the shots.

The Tour Bite Soft, however, does not hold the tension well like most polyester strings since it is softer. It can also lose some of its elasticity after extended play. Despite this, the Tour Bite Soft provides great comfort and spin while not sacrificing too much power.

  • The X-one Biphase from Tecnifibre is a multifilament string built for comfort, feel and power. Similar to many other multifilaments, it is soft on the arm and provides loads of power in your game.

The X-One Biphase is incredibly comfortable and soft on the arm and yet lively and crisp on contact. It plays similarly to many of the other multifilament strings on the market but it retains the tension better than many others.

This might not offer the greatest spin potential, but it will be sufficient for many players. Overall, it is a great string for players looking for a good feel and power without sacrificing any comfort when playing.

  • The Cyclone from Volkl is a black co-polyester monofilament string. Like most polyester strings, it too offers spin and control to your game. The Cyclone is a highly user-friendly string that does not need a “break-in” period.

The Volkl Cyclone offers a very similar feel to the RPM Blast, providing a good amount of spin and control to your game. The decagonal profile of the string bites and pockets the ball really well to add spin with minimal effort. Though it is a polyester string it offers a decent amount of power to the shots as well.

The Volkl cyclone is a well-balanced string and is one that you can get accustomed to easily. It is recommended for all levels, but it might be more suited for players with longer strokes and faster swings, as most polyester strings are.

  • The Alu Power from Luxilon is a gray co-polyester monofilament string. Like most polyester strings, it too offers spin and control to your game. The Alu power is undoubtedly the most iconic and popular polyester strings on the market with its exceptional feel and touch.

The Alu Power is a simple circular polyester string unlike textured strings like the RPM Blast and the Hyper-G, yet it offers the control like many others. Although it might not grip the ball as well as the textured strings for added spin to the shots, it still has above-average spin potential.

The Alu power is a polyester string that provides a good balance of power and control. It is recommended for intermediate and advanced players who have longer strokes and faster swings, with an aggressive style of play.

  • The Yonex Poly Tour Pro is a soft co-poly string with a round profile. Like most poly strings it can provide good control and spin to your game.

The Poly Tour Pro is a monofilament round polyester string that offers extra comfort, and durability without sacrificing control. The string is softer than most polyester strings in the market making it one of the most arm-friendly co-poly strings. Although it is a soft polyester, its low-powered nature still makes it easy for players to swing out at the ball.

The Poly Tour Pro holds tension better than any other soft polyester strings on the market as Yonex stretches the string through high temperatures to improve its tension maintenance. Overall, it is a great string for players who are looking for a blend of control, comfort and durability.

  • The Poly Tour Drive is a shaped co-poly string from Yonex, which provides exceptional spin and feel to the shots. Akin to most polyester strings it provides good control and spin to your game.

The Poly Tour Drive is a monofilament-shaped polyester string that offers spin, control, feel and durability. The string offers great control and spin potential due to its sharp edges that are able to bite into the ball and impart spin. The firmness of the string provides good control even for slower strokes.

The Poly Tour Drive has exceptional spin potential and pocketing which provides good feedback to the players. This string is recommended for players looking for spin and control at a lower price point.

  • The IQ Hexa string from ProKennex is an ultra-durable co-polyester monofilament string engineered in hexagonal profile for the best performance and spin. Like most poly strings it can add more control to your game.

The IQ Hexa is one of the softer co-poly strings in the market and it offers more spin potential to the shots. However, it does not bite the ball as well as the Babolat RPM Blast and the Solinco Hyper-G.

The IQ Hexa is a highly durable string due to its material and also retains tension really well. It plays like most classic strings with a good pop. It is a great string for players looking for good value and players looking to add more control and spin into their shots.

  • The IQ Elite string from ProKennex is a multifilament string using thermo-processed polyurethane resin. The advanced nylon microfiber filaments will provide enhanced elasticity and resiliency. Thus, it provides a good response with power and comfort to your arm.

  • The Spin Perfect from Whipper is a specially designed synthetic gut with a monofilament center that is coated with multi-diameter layers of wraps. Like many other synthetic guts, this string is able to provide more power.

Due to the unique construction of the string, it is able to provide a rougher surface and higher elasticity for more perfect spins, slices and powerful shots. Though it is a synthetic gut, its rough surface allows it to bite and pocket the ball well enough to add spin to most of your shots.

This string is a powerful and durable one. It is recommended for higher beginners and above who are looking for that extra spin and power in their shots.

  • The AS Blend strings from Whipper is a pre-packed hybrid set up. It is a mix of the Aramid (similar to kevlar) and the synthetic guts string. There are three different gauges to choose from for different feel and durability.

The AS Blend string is a durable setup for players. Overall, it is a great set of strings if you are seeking more balance in your shots.

Our Recommendations Based On Your Style Of Play

  • Babolat RPM Blast (firm polyester)

Used by Rafael Nadal, this tennis string paired with the right player will form a lethal combination on court. Blast your opponents away with this control -oriented polyester string. The firmness of RPM Blast allows for maximum control. The multi edged profile allows for the string to grip the ball upon contact to generate maximum spin!

A more comfortable alternative to firmer poly strings is going with a soft poly. It will still offer you plenty of control and spin with a little more comfort and a softer feel. Good for those who find firm polyester a little too jarring on the arm but do not want to sacrifice the benefits of control from poly strings.

  • Whipper Spin Perfect

FAQs

  • If you play regularly (once or twice a week), you should restring your racket every 2 months.

In order to maintain the responsiveness of your strings and the correct tension, you should restring at least three times a year.

  • This depends on your style of play and preferences. Lower tension (looser strings) usually offer more power, and higher tension (tighter strings) usually offer more control.

In general, if you are a beginner, you should try to opt for higher tension so that you can better control your shots. Experienced players might prefer lower tension for more power.

  • There are different types of strings: natural gut, synthetic, multifilament, and polyester. Each type has different properties and cost.
